Biography of Katerina Mertikas |
Close Window |
The naive vitality and joy of Katerina Mertikas and her genius as a colourist have won her the admiration of art collectors across Canada and beyond. Her compositions, although deceptively naive, are rendered visually complex by her handling of colour and surface. In 1995 Katerina was elected a Fellow of Royal Society for the encouragement of the Arts (RSA), a fellowship whose patron is Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh. Her shows in Calgary, Montreal and Ottawa sell out completely.
Many of her works are singled out for special recognition. Unicef has selected a number of her paintings for cards and in 1995, to commemorate Unicef's 50th anniversary, the Isle of Guernsey published a stamp featuring Katerina's art work. Unicef has honoured singers Julio Iglesias and Nana Mouskouri for their contributions to Unicef by presenting each with a Mertikas painting. The Canadian Lung association chose the Mertikas painting, "Children in Song," for their 1994 Chrismas Seal campaign. Katerina was honoured in 1999 in Ottawa as one of the Women of the Year for her tireless support of children's charitable causes and for her longstanding work with Unicef.
Katerina Mertikas' works appear in prestigious private and corporate collections including the collection of Prime Minister and Mrs. Jean Chretien.
